The Simone Veil school complex in Villeurbanne (69) is back in session for the second time, accommodating 750 pupils on 4,945 m2 spread over three levels.
This new school facility – 15 elementary school classes, 10 kindergarten classes, 42 cribs for the crèche – is presented in the Innovation section of Cahiers Techniques du Bâtiment. It explains how the building works, and focuses on the production and installation of the double-skin terracotta facade with its “sophisticated design, which can be used as a mantle wall or cladding”.
The school group is now a landmark in the Carré de Soie ZAC, with its original façade: “Whether opaque, filtered or open, this skin is always playful, vibrant and organic. Its rhythm is threefold: the fragmented volumetry of the building, the work of artist Pauline Guerrier composed of more or less inclined brick projections, and the latticework of terracotta modules forming privacy screens and sunshades”, explain the architects from Rougerie+Tangram.
An aesthetic and poetic façade, but also technically innovative, requiring an Atex certificate from the CSTB, as the building is located in a seismic zone.
Many thanks to the editorial team and to Carol Maillard for shedding some light on the subject.
