Building in the immediate vicinity of the emblematic Fort St Nicolas in Marseille is a challenge. The agency’s architectural response consists of straightening the buildable volume to make a vertical, punctual, recessed signal, as a courtesy to the Fort, whose composition offers a succession of plateaus progressing from the “glacis”, a suspended garden designed to cover the road interchange present within the careening basin.
A large sloping planted space, its purpose is to link the upper and lower towns to the port while eliminating the nuisances associated with the road exchanges in the tunnels crossing the town.
