At the entrance to Aix-en-Provence, the Colonel Jeanpierre traffic circle was impressive for its unusual size – 120 m in diameter – as well as for its cardinal composition, with each lane running north-south or east-west.
The multimodal interchange now fits within the strict confines of the inner circle of the former roundabout and is accompanied by the creation of a new traffic lane dedicated to high service level buses. The choice of an altimeter setting has made it possible to create a pedestrian porosity between the residences on the edge of the structure and the new infrastructure. This levelling is revealed by a very simple vegetation treatment: the lawn underlines the play of levels, while lines of trees, pines, almond trees and Bohemian olive trees, planted on the banks, underline the scale of the infrastructure.
