The international competition for the urbanisation of the Principality of Monaco at sea was launched by Prince Albert II, who wanted to offer his city and the world a major eco-construction project for an exemplary marine city respecting its natural environment.

The project is based on the implementation of a bioclimatic marine district protected by two large energy dykes and forming, over 275,000 m2, a veritable Venice of modern times with its residential and office buildings, its schools, its commercial and leisure facilities, its maritime terminal with its business district overlooked by an immense sun-skinned canopy and its great underwater opera house.

The latter, a true flagship building, is intended to be the symbol of the future Monaco’s influence on the Mediterranean and the world. The entire project is supported by aprons, large concrete platforms supported by immense pillars that ensure a minimal footprint on the marine ecosystems of the Bay of Monaco.
