The ocean, often referred to as the blue lung of our planet, plays a crucial role in climate regulation and the survival of many species. Yet today, it is threatened by a multitude of factors, including climate change, overfishing, plastic pollution and the exploitation of marine resources. This worrying fact is at the heart of the debates at numerous international summits, such as the Nice Climate Summit, which took place at the end of September.

Focusing on the theme “Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean”, this event brought together experts, scientists, political and economic players to discuss the threats to the oceans and propose concrete solutions. Among the speakers was Jacques Rougerie, President of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation, who delivered a powerful message on the need to reinvent our relationship with the ocean by collaborating with young architects on visionary projects such as SeaOrbiter.

This summit is a key step towards the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 2025), to be held in Nice next June. This international event, organized by France and Costa Rica, aims to accelerate action to preserve the oceans and marine biodiversity. The conference will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, from governments and NGOs to scientific institutions and local communities, to assess the challenges and opportunities in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 14, which advocates the sustainable use of oceans and their resources.

The ocean, which generates one in every two breaths, is more than ever at the center of global concerns. France, through initiatives such as the “Our Ocean” conference and the call for a pause in seabed mining, is leading the way for swift and decisive action. At the same time, young citizens from all over the world will be prepared by the Nausicaá organization to carry the voice of their generation to UNOC 2025.

Now is the time to mobilize. The 2025 conference will be a decisive moment for raising awareness among governments and the general public of ecological issues and the need to preserve this vital ecosystem. The commitments made today will determine the future of the oceans, and consequently that of humanity.
